Petunidin was first discovered by the Hungarian biochemist Albert Szent-Gyorgyi in 1938. He made this discovery at the same time that he discovered the other flavonoids (a group of phytonutrients that include anthocyanins). Upon discovering the flavonoids, Albert Szent-Gyorgyi believed that he had uncovered some new vitamins and so named them vitamin P. However, it was later discovered that the flavonoids are not actually essential to survival in humans so not technically vitamins.
